What’s the best Solar Panel on the market?


One of the most common questions that come up when thinking of investing in solar energy at home is: what is the best solution for my household? There are a variety of products and brands on the market and the choice can be confusing.


Leaving out thin-film solar panels, which require an amount of space prohibitive for most residential applications, the first distinction to make is between monocrystalline and polycrystalline solar panels. Although slightly cheaper upfront, polycrystalline tend to be less pure than thin film or monocrystalline solar panels. In the longer term, however, what brings real value is the space-efficiency of a panel, or what percentage of solar energy (or photons) hitting the panel surface is then converted into usable household electricity. Given that a solar panel is an investment that will pay for itself over the years, monocrystalline panels (which currently deliver 17-19% efficiency) are to be preferred over polycrystalline ones (13-16% efficiency).


As for brands, the best solar panel currently available on the Australian market is, without a doubt, the LG NeON®2 330-watt solar panel, released in 2016 . When deciding what size of system to buy for your home, factors to consider include: past usage data from your bills (we like to see a 12-month span to ensure we’ve got the most precise estimate); whether you’d like to invest in batteries to be able to store your electricity for later use (in which case you want to oversize your system to allow you to collect an excess); and any future investments you’re planning (say, a spa that might consume extra kWh).


Solar Panel Installation Requirements


Another question that might come up when researching residential solar energy generation is where should solar panels be installed, and whether the space required is indeed available. Most roofs will fit about 16 330-watt panels, however it isn’t necessarily the case that they should be mounted on the roof. In fact, to optimise exposure to the sun rays, we advise installing them on a tracker, which will turn the solar panels to allow them to follow the sun, similarly to what a sunflower does. The tracker can either be placed on the roof or the lawn, or any other area with access to plenty of sunlight. Solar panel installation on the north side of the house is not necessarily the best as one might be tempted to think. We recommend a north-westerly orientation to generate electricity in the afternoon and evening, between 2pm and 8pm, when most people get home and start consuming. This is also to counter the peak hour tariffs in this timeframe.

Q: Where do your solar panels come from? Who is your supplier?

Q: How long can I expect my solar panels to last?

However, you can reasonably expect LG solar panels to last well into their 20’s; Australian standards require solar panels to perform at 90% of their original capacity after 20 years from installation, and 80% after 25 years. After that, you’ll probably want to upgrade to a newer, more efficient technology.

Q: How is solar panel efficiency different to its output?

Solar panel efficiency is directly related to output. The more efficient the panels are, the greater the output. LG NeON®2 solar panels are unbeatable in terms of space-efficiency to price ratio. With a 19.3% module efficiency, for every 100 photons that hit the panel, 19.3% are converted into energy.


Q: How much power will my system generate?
Energy generation, or watt rating, is 330 watt per hour (or 0.33kWh) per LG NeON®2 panel. That translates into over 5 kilowatts of production per hour for a typical 16-panel solution.


Q: Do solar panels require any maintenance?

Apart from exceptional circumstances, such as heavy dust storms, LG NeON®2 solar panels hardly require any maintenance. Normal weather conditions and the occasional rain storm take care of clearing off any dust particles that might sediment over the surface of the panels over time. For good measure, we recommend hosing the solar panels down with soapy water every 5 years.

The N-type doping of the NeON® cells results in extremely low Light Induced Degradation (LID) when compared with the standard P-type cells. This means more electricity generation over the life of the panel, as the panel degrades less.

Extensive Testing Programme

LG solar panels are tested between 2 to 4 times the International Standards at our in-house testing laboratories, ensuring a very robust and longer lasting solar module.

Cyclone Wind Load Resistance

LG modules have a strong double walled frame. When it comes to wind forces (rear load) many competitor modules are certified to 2400 Pascals. LG modules are certified to more than double – 5400 Pascals, which provides at least double the strength and durability to a standard module.

Positive Tolerance (0/+3%)

If you buy a 330 Watt panel then the flash test of this panel will show somewhere between 330W and 340W. Some competitor panels have -/+ tolerance, so you could get a flash test result below the rated Watt, meaning you pay for Watts you never get.

Anti PID Technology for Yield Security

PID (Potential Induced Degradation) affects the long term ability of panels to produce high level electricity output. LG panels have anti PID technology and have been successfully tested by leading third party laboratories regarding PID resistance.
